The First Evangelical Church in Glendale (FECG) is seeking a creative and energetic Children’s Minister to join our pastoral team. The Children’s Minister will provide leadership, vision, and oversight for our ministry to children from birth through 5th grade and support for their parents. Our goal is to create a safe, joyful, and biblically-committed environment where children will encounter the love of Jesus Christ and develop a foundation for faith.

FECG is committed to reaching and welcoming new families to our church, and this role carries strategic importance. We have a current population of about 20 children but have budgeted for a full-time Children’s minister to develop and expand the ministry. The Children’s Minister will be asked to engage the children of the community and of our members. To that end, the Children’s Minister will build volunteer teams, partner with parents, and help position the church as a welcoming place for families to flourish.

About FECG

We are a multi-language and multi-generational non-denominational evangelical church located in Glendale, CA. While we have ministries in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, our children’s and youth ministries are conducted in English. We believe that Christian discipleship is for the whole family and seek to create an environment for children to discover and grow in faith in Christ.

Responsibilities

1.   Vision and Ministry Development

• Provide vision and leadership for the church’s ministry to children (birth through 5th grade).

• Report to the Senior Pastor to develop a children’s ministry strategy that aligns with the church’s mission and desire to reach this generation of families.

• Establish ministry structures and processes that can expand as the church grows.

• Regularly assess the ministry and implement improvements that enhance discipleship and outreach.

2.   Sundays

• Plan and oversee engaging children’s ministry programming for Sunday mornings, including children’s worship, Sunday school lessons, crafts, and snacks.

• Select or develop curriculum that faithfully and clearly teaches and applies Scripture.

• Design ministry environments that are safe, fun, relational, and spiritually meaningful for children.

3.   Fridays

• The Friday evening Kid’s Club runs concurrently with the youth fellowship, Mandarin-speaking fellowships, and some English LifeGroups.

• Develop Kid’s Club into a purposeful ministry that will attract participation and support from children and parents, respectively.

4.   Volunteer Recruitment and Development

• Recruit, train, and encourage volunteers to serve in children’s ministry.

• Equip volunteers to teach and lead with developmentally appropriate lessons.

• Foster a healthy team culture where volunteers feel supported, appreciated, and connected to the larger church.

5.   Partnerships with Parents and Families

• Cultivate relationships with parents and caregivers.

• Provide encouragement and support that empowers parents to disciple their children at home.

• Maintain regular communication with families regarding ministry opportunities and events.

• Work with other staff and leaders to help families feel welcomed and connected within the church community.

6.    Community Connection and Outreach Last revision

• Assist in current and new ideas for outreach that connect the church with families in the surrounding community.

• Oversee special events such as Vacation Bible School, family events, and seasonal outreach opportunities.

7.   Safety and Administrative Oversight

• Maintain and enforce policies that ensure the safety and protection of children, including required background checks and safety training.

• Maintain and monitor attendance records and ministry communication systems.

• Maintain a secure check-in and check-out process for the children’s ministry

• Responsibly manage the children’s ministry budget and communicate its needs.

• Communicate with a liaison from the Deacon Board to address facility needs or repairs.

8.   Staff and Church Collaboration

• Collaborate closely with the pastoral staff to align the children’s ministry with the church’s overarching mission and discipleship strategy.

• Participate in staff meetings and ministry planning sessions.

• Support church-wide initiatives and events.

• Occasionally be available for evening or weekend events related to family or children’s ministry.

Qualifications

Spiritual Qualifications

• Maintain a personal and evolving relationship with Jesus Christ.

• Demonstrate a clear calling and passion for disciplining children and serving families.

• Exhibit Christian character, humility, and servant leadership.

• Affirm and support the church’s statement of faith. 

Education and Experience

• 2+ years experience leading a children’s ministry.

• A bachelor’s degree in ministry, theology, education, or a related field is preferred. • Experience recruiting and leading volunteer teams.

Skills and Competencies

• Possess strong leadership and organizational abilities.

• Exhibit effective communication and interpersonal skills with children, parents, volunteers, and staff.

• Demonstrate the ability to build and develop teams and new leaders.

• Exhibit clear communication and effective administrative skills.

• Show creativity in developing engaging ministry environments for children.

Physical Requirements

This position necessitates standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting while interacting with children in classroom and activity settings.

Compensation

Salary is determined based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include medical insurance for the minister and their family, sick leave, and vacation pay becomes available after the first full year of service. The church offers a limited contribution match to a 401(k) plan after the first year of employment.
